There are so many great books out there written by physicians, researchers, and other health professionals that can serve as great resources for someone wanting to learn more about different approaches to health. It's such an amazing thing that we're able to access different perspectives, experiences, and recommendations about health and wellness through reading. Each resource we share will have a different backstory and share unique passions felt by the authors.

We want to share some of our favorite books with you! Consider these blog posts as our book club. We'll break down the basics behind the books we recommend to give you the inside scoop. If any of these topics catch your eye, give it a read and drop your thoughts in the comments below.

The Wahls Protocol

Our first book in this series is written by Dr. Terry Wahls, MD. Her book is all about the paleo principles that she recommends for autoimmune conditions. What's an autoimmune condition or disease? In simple terms, these conditions develop when one's own immune system mistakenly attacks it's own healthy cells — leading to cell dysfunction and destruction over time.

Dr. Wahls was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis — an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the protective coverings of our nerves — in 2000. Within a few years of conventional treatment, she was quickly functionally declining. A traditional, "Western" physician herself she was frustrated and fearful the path her health was taking, so she decided to look in a different direction. She steered her focus towards what she was eating, aiming to consume a nutrient-rich, whole-foods diet. Over time, she adjusted her diet into one that promoted neuromuscular stimulation.

Years later she not only was able to walk again, but 10 years after her diagnosis of a progressive autoimmune condition, she was biking eighteen miles each day. Her progress was, IS remarkable. Now, she's sharing her findings with the world. In her book, she explains the details behind her healing protocol that lead to the reversal of many of her symptoms and vastly improved her quality of life.
